Watercraft safety for all ages

family in a boatThe weather’s warm and the water’s calling. This is the time of year when people of all ages are at the lakes, beaches or ocean, soaking up the sand, sea and sun.

It's important to keep aware of all dangers when using watercraft. As a business owner, making sure all safety protocols are in place could be a lifesaver. Always try to avoid accidents, especially if you need to use your business insurance.

Here’s what you need to know:

Everyone should wear life preservers

Life preservers are a must, especially when transporting children. Accidents or mishaps on the water happen in an instant. Never put yourself or anyone else in the position where someone’s life is in jeopardy. A life preserver can work wonders in the blink of an eye.

Have an exit strategy

If passengers are on a boat, everyone needs to know the evacuation plan. Don't cast off without setting evacuation plans. This includes noting the location of any rafts and other items passengers may need. Inclement weather or other water hazards have no buffer. Being proactive in ensuring the safety of others is key.

Age of operation

Only someone of appropriate age should operate jet skis, water skis and other equipment. It is also key to communicate the importance of being safe and respecting others in the water. Respecting the right-of-way and rules of engagement on the water makes a difference.

Equipment Checks

Check and double-check every piece of equipment before going out on the water. Keep everyone safe by avoiding equipment that doesn't work well.

Excessive speeds

In a nutshell, don’t do it. Law enforcement is active on land and in the water. Their mission? Monitoring how people act and operate their watercraft. It is very easy to receive a citation for reckless endangerment. Maintain a reasonable speed on the water to keep yourself and others around you safe.

Follow these guidelines and you’ll be on the right side of water safety. When renting to others, always have an adequate business insurance policy. This will provide the protection you need when renting to others. Your insurance agent can help determine how much coverage you need. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Take the time to check your policy today!

First Independent has your coverage needs in mind. Call us at (586) 247-2220 for more information. We can help you get a policy that meets your needs.
